functional traits

Characteristic of the morphology, biochemical activity, physiology, structure, phenology or behaviour of individual (plants, animals, etc.) that impact their survival. These traits can explain how species react to their environment (response traits), and/or how they affect their environment (effect traits). Some examples of functional traits of trees : Size, seed mass, bark thickness, nitrogen in the leaves, etc.
