forest stands

A forest stand is a parcel of forest with a relatively homogeneous composition and structure. It can be composed of trees of different species and ages, but the distribution of these trees in space will show a pretty similar pattern in all of the stand. Forest stands can be next to one another, and are not necessarily separated by non-forest surfaces. Forest stands are the basic unit of management in forestry, and they are often used in ecology to describe forest landscapes.
