functional diversity

The diversity of functional traits for one or more species in ecosystem. Can be measured in many different ways, similarly to biodiversity. For example, one can try to see if the trees of a given forest have varying heights, seed mass, and bark thickness. That might be the case even though the forest in question does not contain many tree species; although biodiversity (number of species) and functional diversity are often positively correlated.
