Christian Messier

Principal Investigator

Biography

Christian Messier is a distinguished expert in biological sciences, with a particular focus on forest ecology. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry (1980–1984) and a Master’s in Forest Sciences (1985–1986) at Université Laval. He then earned his PhD in Forest Sciences (1987–1991) from the University of British Columbia, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Forest Ecology (1991–1992) at the University of Helsinki. Since June 1991, he has been a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He is now also a professor at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO).

Messier’s research focuses on two key areas. The first explores the complex functioning of natural and managed forest systems to develop management approaches that enhance resilience to global changes. The second research area examines urban trees and forests, developing new approaches and tools to improve pruning interventions and enhance tree planting strategies in urban and peri-urban areas.

Renowned for his research on forest regeneration dynamics following the cutting of old-growth forests, Messier has an extensive publication record. His significant contributions to the field have established him as a respected authority within the scientific community.
