Biography

Maxwell Schrimpf is a PhD student at the University of Alberta focusing on adaptive silviculture and stand dynamics. He holds a BSc in Environmental and Natural Resources from The Ohio State University and an MSc in Forestry from Mississippi State University. Previously, Maxwell worked as a private lands forester in both Michigan and Ohio, helping landowners manage their woods for the future. Growing up and working in Ohio, Maxwell experienced the effects of emerald ash borer, Dutch elm disease, and the mesophication of traditionally oak dominated forests. These experiences encouraged him to help find ways to make deciduous forest more resillient to climate change.

Maxwell is particularly interested in the dynamics of mixed species stands and how environmental factors and species’ characterisitics interact. He is excited to join DIVERSE and its possibility to study both large scale impacts across different ecosystems, while also investigating those impacts and strategies that can be implemented on a smaller scale.
